Question:

Assalamu Alaikum, Could you please tell me whether Bismillah Ceremony for children's is in islam or is it a Bidah. And i want to know what kind of ceremonies are obligatory in islam. I will be happy to hear from you soon. Thank You, Md. Noorullah Hussaini

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.

We are not aware of any ceremony in Islam which is called Bismillaah Ceremony for children. Therefore, you should avoid such a ceremony so that one will not fall into innovations.

There are no obligatory celebrations in Islam, whether this is in regard to children or else. We have already issued Fataawa 81275, 88081 and 83120 clarifying some rulings pertaining to a new born child and clarified that it is permissible to make the ‘Aqeeqah as a feast whereby people are invited for a meal.

Allaah Knows best.
