Want to cut off ties with their uncles who harmed their father financially

Question:

We hailed from a joint family background, with me being the only son to my parents and having two sisters who are married and settled abroad. My father's two brothers have three sons each and the brothers are constantly squeezing my father of his finances reminding him that he has just one son and that they have three. Infact it was my father's hard work that has contributed to the entire family's wealth whereas the brothers have always been easy going and have even put a great amount of debt on us without our knowledge, by having my father's general power of attorney on their name when he was away for sometime. My sisters and me have decided to cut ties from our uncles as they have constantly tried oppressing us and emotionally blackmailing our father as he is the eldest in the family. Please guide us and suggest and is it not our uncle's responsibility to pay back the debt that they have put on our heads. What is Islam's ruling on such relatives? Kindly help.

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

If your father is sane and has sound judgment, then he is allowed to act in his money as he pleases within the bounds of what is permissible, so you should not interfere in this matter.

If he gives some money to his brothers, then this may be because of his family relationship with his brothers, and he wanted to keep ties with them by doing so; this is among the generosity and good morals of men. However, you may advise him in regard to a better handling of his money without preventing him from using it to keep ties with his kinship.

Furthermore, you are not permitted to cut ties with your uncles because if you do so, you are severing ties with your kinship and this is a great sin.
