Question:

Please I want to know if it is permissible to write small note ( brief explanations of chapters, verses or ayats ) for clearer understanding of such chapters, verse, ayats on the pages of the Quran using pencils, pens or any form of markers so that in future reading that page, the small notes would bring forth remembrance of the explaination of the verses or ayats.

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

It is more appropriate to avoid writing on the margin of the Mus’haf (the Arabic text of the Quran) as a way of glorifying the Book of Allaah and fearing that this would cause confusion for the reader.

Indeed, the Permanent Committee of Iftaa’ issued a Fatwa regarding writing on the margin of the Mus’haf, the number of this Fatwa is 18618.

Allaah Knows best.
