Better for a widow to live with her family

Question:

I am a twenty-four-year-old woman; I have been a widow for three months. I decided to leave for Amman to live with my mother-in-law. She has sons who all live abroad, except one who is married and lives with her in the same house. Her sons visit her every year. They gave me a solution, which is to live in a separate home with my children; but in the meantime I would live with her and her son in the same house. Is it permissible to do so?

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, the Lord of thew. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His Slave and Messenger.

It is more preferable for you to live in Kuwait with your family and Mahrams (non-marriageable male relatives). You do not have to leave for Amman to live with your mother-in-law, especially since you would stay temporarily in the same home with her and her son. In this case, temptation cannot be escaped either from him or any other.

Your stay with your family is not considered deprivation for the grandmother. You can keep kinship ties by visits, letters, calls, and so on. This is based on your ability. Allaah The Almighty Says (what means): {So fear Allaah as much as you are able…} [Quran 64:16]

If it becomes incumbent upon you to move to Amman as there are valid reasons seen by the family of your husband, then, it is permissible for you to go provided that there is safety from Fitnah (trial). However, it is better and safer for you to stay with your family.

Allaah Knows best.
