Question:

Asalaam aleykum.I want to know if it is permisble to work as a "student advisor/counsellor" in the west if it includes for example:Giving advise on which education program or collage to choose.OrHelping them to find a working place where they can practice (to get working experience)What if a student wants to study for example music, or something that is haram, if I give her advise on where to study or which school, but without auktually registrating that student on that school/collage will it be considered helping in sin? Or if you help them find a working place (that deals with haramwork) but without really placing them there, will it be considered helping in sin?Know if you send or give the student advise on visiting an event where many different representaions of high schools or collages, education programs etc. will be there, even programs like for example music education etc. will I be helping or contributing to sin, if a student get inpiried a program/education that deals with haram or teach haram, even if I did not encouraged them to choose these, but simply just advised them to attend the event, if that is included in my job?Barak'Allahu feekom.

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

There is no harm on you –Allah willing –in working as a student advisor/counsellor guiding them to work places or training places and so on, provided that you do not guide them to what is forbidden, otherwise you are helping them in sin.

Allah Says (what means): {And cooperate in righteousness and piety, but do not cooperate in sin and aggression. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is severe in penalty.} [Quran 5:2]

Therefore, you should know that if you give advice to a student who wants to study music, about the place of study or the place of the school where music is taught, then this is helping in sin or guiding people to it.

Also, advice and counselling requires that you clarify to the person who seeks advice what harms him so that he would avoid it and not to help him in doing it.

As regards giving advice on an educational event to many educational institutions and collages, and various educational programs, some of which may involve what is forbidden, then there is no harm in this. Given that the person has the choice between all these fields, so if he chooses what includes what is forbidden, then you have nothing to do with that, so you are not sinful in that –Allah willing.

It should be noted that there are some Islamic conditions for a woman to work, which we have already clarified in Fatwa 82399, so please refer to it.

Allah knows best.
