Question:

I want to ask a question about dreams. Since the beginning of this year I have been have gay sexual dreams that I don't like. they always come and go but there was a time it came too close so I prayed very hard for them to stop they stop from about two months only but then something happened last month I started having different sexual dreams that I don't even understand. I did not take them serious but I still prayed for them to stop. But then of recent I had a gay dream and I don't know what to do because the first time I had those gay dreams I asked myself why and I thought maybe it was because I use to reading too much sexual scenes in novels but I have stop reading them. I only read romance novels that don't have sexual scenes in them. But another thing I noticed is that anytime I have any dreams I don't like I must have spoken about it durning the day before sleeping. So my question is that it the novels that I am reading which on longer have sexual scenes or it because of I think about it during the day and I really need to know because of the gay dreams they causes wasswa which almost made feel like taking my life out of frustration. Please I want to know if stopping reading the romance novels will stop the dreams or it is thinking about it during the day which will stop wasswa from coming back in Coming head and I also watch a lot of romance tv and I also want to know If I should stop that too to stop the wasswa from coming back.

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu`alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and messenger.

Reading these novels may be the reason for the disturbing dreams you suffer from. That is because “what is on a person’s mind” is one of the kinds of dreams as evidenced by the authentic Sunnah of the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ). We have previously clarified this point in Fatwa 86613 that casts light on the etiquette to be applied when seeing frightening dreams.

We hope keeping away from reading such novels would help you to get rid of these dreams. For more information on the ruling of reading romantic novels, kindly refer to Fatwa 86046. Under all circumstances, it is better for the Muslim to fill his time with what benefits him. You would find some relevant instructions in Fatwa 86533.

Allah knows best.
