Eating Spoiled Food

Question:

I eat a cake which has a fungus or bacteria is it pure or impure to eat ?

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.

The mere presence of fungi or bacteria in the cake does not necessitate ruling it ritually impure (najis); for impurity is a matter of Sharia ruling, and not everything the soul finds repulsive or that is harmful to health is impure. Pure food is not ruled impure merely because mold appears in it, unless some Sharia-recognized cause arises that necessitates its impurity.

As for the ruling on eating it, a distinction should be made between mere spoilage and the occurrence of harm from consuming it. The scholars have mentioned that it is disliked (makruh) to eat foul-smelling food when no harm is feared from it; but if genuine, considerable harm is feared from eating it, then it becomes forbidden due to the harm, even if it remains ritually pure.

Abu Tha'labah al-Khushani may Allaah be pleased with him reported that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: “If you shoot your arrow and it goes out of your sight, then you find it, eat [the quarry], so long as it has not begun to stink.” [Muslim]

It is stated in *Tarh al-Tathrib* (6/11): “The correct view among our companions [i.e., the Shafi'is] is that eating foul-smelling food is disliked, not forbidden, unless considerable harm is feared from it.

Among the evidences that a mere change in the smell of food does not necessitate the prohibition of eating it is the statement of Anas may Allaah be pleased with him : “The Prophet (ﷺ) would be invited to barley bread and rancid fat, and he would accept.” [Narrated by al-Tirmidhi in *al-Shama'il*].

The phrase “rancid fat” refers to fat whose smell had changed due to prolonged storage. This is understood to refer to a change that does not raise fear of harm.

Accordingly, the ritual purity of the cake does not necessarily mean it is permissible to eat it. If mold or signs of spoilage appear in it, you should not eat it if there is a considerable fear of harm, and specialists should be consulted to determine this. The mere fact of its purity cannot be used as evidence that it is safe from harm.

Allah Knows best.
