Sitting where alcohol is served

Question:

I am working as Sales Executive, my job requires a lot of traveling and meeting customers from all over the world. Sometimes we have to meet customers for business dinner where alcohol been served on the table. Of course I don't drink, but is it Halal or Haram to sit on this table?

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

It is confirmed that the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said: “Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should not sit at a table where alcohol [or any other kind of intoxicant] is being served.” [Ahmad, At-Tirmithi and An-Nassaa’i]

Therefore, dear Brother, you should stay away from such gatherings. Indeed, you may present excuses and organize work gatherings at other places as to abide by the orders of Allah and His Messenger sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) and to protect yourself from seeing evil and not hating it in your heart. This might lead to getting accustomed to it and becoming ill-minded, not being able to differentiate between what is good and what is bad.

May Allah guide us and you to the right path and protect us from falling in sinful acts.

Allah knows best.
