Question:

I am living in Japan as a student I have a job to save some money. It is in the kitchen of a hotel away from where alcohol is consumed. Is this job ok?

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

It is known that the Japanese are neither Muslims nor from the People of the Book. So, the meat of any animal they slaughter is forbidden for Muslims regardless of how the Japanese slaughter their animals.

So, the Japanese kitchen contains some of this meat or some pork. It is unlawful for a Muslim to work in such kitchens. In fact, the Muslim should oppose all Munkar (bad deeds) with all his strength. Allah Says (what means): {And it has already come down to you in the Book that when you hear the verses of Allah [recited], they are denied [by them] and ridiculed; so do not sit with them until they enter into another conversation. Indeed, you would then be like them.} [Quran 4:140]

So, the Muslim should not sit with non-Muslims while they are practicing their evil acts as this might cause him to become so used to these acts that they make him indifferent while he should be very upset and angry when he sees a Munkar being practiced. This might even lead him to commit such sins.

Allah knows best.
