Zulm (injustice) in context of the modern world

Question:

What is Zulm (injustice)? What is its context in today's modern world?

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

Injustice in terminology is to put something in a place other than its correct place. In religion, injustice means a transgression, a violation of the truth. It has many forms, all of which are forbidden in the Book of Allaah, in the Sunnah of the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) and by the consensus of the scholars may Allaah have mercy upon them.

In the Book of Allaah: Allaah Says (what means): {Indeed, those who disbelieve and commit wrong [or injustice] — never will Allaah forgive them, nor will He guide them to a path. Except the path of Hell; they will abide therein forever. And that, for Allaah, is [always] easy.} [Quran 4:168-169]

In the Sunnah: Abu Tharr may Allaah be pleased with him narrated that the  Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said that Allaah, the Most-High, Said "Oh My slaves, I forbade injustice upon Me, and I have made it forbidden amongst yourselves, so do not transgress each other." [Muslim]

Besides, all the scholars may Allaah have mercy upon them agreed in a consensus that injustice is forbidden and abominable.  Ibn Al-Jawzi may Allaah have mercy upon him while clarifying the abominability of injustice, he said: "Injustice comprehends two kinds of disobediences: the first is taking people's money  unjustly, and the second is contesting and contradicting Allaah through disobeying Him and violating His rulings. The injustice here is greater than other forms of injustice. Of course, this does not take place except from a weak person who cannot win. Rather, injustice comes from the darkness of the heart because if this heart had been shown guidance, it would certainly take heed (to what it heard and learnt).

If pious persons persevere with the light they have obtained from piety, the injustice of wrongdoers will be encompassed (encircled), as their injustice will not benefit them in any way."

The injustice which is spread nowadays over the world is one form of deviation from religion, natural disposition, and from the sound reasoning, and the disappearance of mercy and good character.

We cannot get rid of this kind of injustice except by returning to the religion of Allaah, the natural disposition and sound reasoning, and not by returning to our desires, whims and man-made laws.

Allaah Knows best.
