Question:

I have lost my second child, she died after four days of birth. Is it permissible to do Tawaaf for her?

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. We ask Allaah to exalt his mention as well as that of his family and all his companions.

First of all we ask Allaah that your daughter will be a forerunner for you on the pond (of the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention )) on the Day of Judgement and an accepted intercessor for you. With regard to circumambulating around the Ka'bah and intending the reward for her, the scholars differed about the ruling of good deeds being performed with this intention; however, they agreed that it is permissible to give charity on his/her behalf or to supplicate for him/her but they differed about other acts. According to the scholars who said that it is permissible, you can make the circumambulation and intend the reward for her. But it was not the habit of our righteous predecessors to do so, and we have never heard that any of them did so in principle. However, they used to perform acts of good deeds for themselves, supplicated and gave charity and intended the reward for the deceased. So we should not differ from the way of our righteous predecessors, as their way is the best and most perfect.

Allaah knows best.
