Question:

I have long hairs. Therefore I tie my hairs with a rubber band and offer my prayer. Is it right or not? What is the meaning of my name 'Talha'? I watch dirty pictures and websites. I have tried very hard to stop these things but unable to do so. How can I stop doing these things? Is listening to music or singing is prohibited in Islam or not? Please give my answer as early as possible.

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

The jurists may Allaah have mercy upon them stated that it is disliked for a praying person to tie his hair. Their evidence for this is that the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said: "Prostrate on seven limbs and not tie any clothes or hair."

It is worth mentioning here that it is not permissible for a man to keep his hair long in a style that resembles women's hair, and it is not permissible for him also to tie it in a way that resembles the way women tie their hair.

As regards the name Talhah, it is the singular of the word Talh, which means bananas or a kind of a very huge tree with plenty of leaves which grows in the Arabic peninsula.

Allaah Knows best.
