Question:

Assalamu Alaikum. At the end of the Funeral prayer is it correct to give salam only to the right side and not the left? If so , kindly support with hadeeth etc. Thank you.

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. We ask Allaah to exalt his mention as well as that of his family and all his companions.

It is permissible to conclude the funeral prayer with one Tasleem only, moreover, some scholars may Allaah have mercy upon them are of the view that this is even desirable. This view is indeed reported from six companions may Allaah be pleased with them.

Ibn Qudaamah may Allaah have mercy upon him said: 'The Tasleem in the funeral prayer is only once (i.e. on one side only) and this is reported from six companions may Allaah be pleased with them 'Ali, Ibn 'Umar, Ibn 'Abbaas, Jaabir, Abu Hurayrah, Anas Ibn Maalik, Ibn Abu Awfa, Waathilah Ibn Al-Asqa' may Allaah be pleased with them this is also the view of Sa'eed Ibn Jubayr, Al-Hassan and Ibn Seereen may Allaah have mercy upon them'

Additionally, the Hanafi and Maaliki Schools of jurisprudence are of the view that only one Tasleem is desirable, whereas the Shaafi'ee School of jurisprudence is of the view that two Tasleem is a Sunnah.

Allaah Knows best.
