Question:

salam alaykum Brothers, who is supposed to give out walima - bride's or groom's family? In Sahih Bukhari we find ahadith which say that Prophet was giving out walimas when he was getting married. In many arabic countries, walima is supposed to be given out by the bride's family - is this accordingly to islam? Jazak Allahu khairan.

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

Waleemah (i.e. the marriage banquet), is a recommended act it is not obligatory according the majority of Muslim scholars may Allaah have mercy upon them and this is the preponderant opinion. It is upon the man to do and not the woman. The Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) ordered ‘Abdur-Rahmaan Bin ‘Awf, may Allaah be pleased with him to give a banquet when he got married as reported by Al-Bukhari and Muslim may Allaah have mercy upon them. Allaah Knows best.
