Celebrating return from Hajj

Question: What is the position of Islam on a celebration being organized after one returns from Hajj. This takes the form of going to the Jummat mosque to announce one's safe return by thanking Allah. After the Jummat prayer people are provided with food and drink at the Hajj's home.

Fatwa:All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad , is His slave and Messenger.
A banquet offered by a pilgrim after his safe return from Hajj or Umrah and to greet him on his arrival are permissible if the purpose is to be thankful to Allah. But one should not burden oneself beyond his capacity or regard this practice as Sunnah.
Know that when such practice is considered Sunnah or assumed to be Sunnah it becomes innovation and thus a Muslim must avoid it.
Allah Knows best.
