Using an illegal electricity connection without paying to the state

Question

ASSALAMALAIKUM WA RAHMATULLAH Respected,I moved to an apartment in october last year with the intention of buying it which by ALLAH's grace and mercy i bought it last month when i moved to this appartm.there exist an illegal electric connection which i used uptill now n still using it not by choice coz i have already applied for a legal connection still waiting to get one my question to u is the electricity which i have cosumed is haram for me i can not pay it back to state it all happened because of widespread corruption in my country but for me being a muslim i'm worried of this haram consumption what should i do (kafarah etc;) Pls note i can not pay it to the state. jazakallah khairun

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His Slave and Messenger.

As long as you are not able to pay for the electricity that you have consumed to the state due to the widespread corruption in your country, then to rid yourself of the liability of that matter you have to spend that money (the value of what you consumed) in the public interests such as schools, hospitals, mosques and the like of what is common among all people.
