Fear of dying while disobeying Allah

Question

Assalaamu alaykum. I read on your site that if a person's last deed before passing from this world is good, then he may be in paradise though he is someone of the fire, and that if his last act is bad, he would be a person in the fire who is from paradise. This worries me because I sometimes do some things that are probably impermissible, such as my current job, which I doubt is permissible (I work in a traditional bank), and I sometimes go out to buy games that might be impermissible, such as chess or cards. Would all the good deeds that I do truly be lost if I were to pass away on my way to such places? I do not drink, I do not eat pork, and I do not engage in adultery, but I still do things that may be impermissible, and I worry that I might pass in a car accident or on my way to such places.

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad, sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.

First of all, you should repent to Allah from this prohibited work and give up whatever constitutes disobedience to Allah and incurs His wrath and punishment. There is no doubt that when a person dies while committing a sin, it is a foul final stage of life; may Allah safeguard us all. However, this does not mean that such a person will necessarily be among the dwellers of Hellfire. Nevertheless, it is feared that he would meet such fate. If a person dies while adhering to Islam, then he is subject to the will of Allah: if He wills, He will punish him, and if He wills, He will forgive him.

There is no doubt that Allah, The Exalted, is Just and does not wrong people in the slightest. However, the Muslim should be constantly mindful of the possibility of dying while doing whatever causes the wrath of Allah and accordingly have a bad end. He should strive in carrying out righteous deeds and hope for the rewards of his Lord. He should not take any sin lightly, for Allah, The Exalted, says (what means): {...and you thought it was insignificant while it was, in the sight of Allah, tremendous.} [Quran 24:15]

So, dear brother, repent to Allah of the sins that you are currently committing, and be firm in His obedience, and ask Him for a good final stage of life.

Allah knows best.
