Question
Who was Ibn Rushd? What was his work? What did he contribute to Islam? What are his teachings? What are the Concepts of Ibn Rushd?
Answer
All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad, sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.
There were two scholars and authors of books of Fiqh who were known as Ibn Rushd. The first was the leading Maaliki scholar Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Ahmad ibn Rushd Abu Al-Waleed Al-Qurtubi Al-Maaliki. He was known as Ibn Rushd the grandfather. He wrote Al-Muqaddimaat Al-Mumahhidaat, Al-Bayaan wat-Tahseel fil Fiqh Al-Maaliki, and other books.
The second was his grandson, Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Muhammad Abu Al-Waleed Al-Qurtubi, the famous Muslim philosopher and Fiqh scholar. He wrote Bidaayat Al-Mujtahid on comparative Fiqh, Adh-Dharoori on Usool Al-Fiqh, and other books.
We suffice with this brief information as we are not specialized in giving detailed biographies of prominent figures, and such information is not needed by lay Muslims as far as their religiosity is concerned; rather, this is considered specialized research. You may consult the books on the biographies of scholars, especially about Ibn Rushd, the grandson, as many studies were written about him.
