Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, the Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad, sallallahu ʻalayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.

Regarding reciting Surat Al-Kaafiroon upon being stung by a scorpion, it is narrated in the Sunnah that the Ruqyah (healing through Quranic recitation or supplication) for the scorpion sting is to recite Surat Al-Falaq, Surat An-Naas, and Surat Al-Kaafiroon. ʻAli, may Allah be pleased with him, said, “The Prophet, sallallahu ʻalayhi wa sallam, was stung by a scorpion while he was praying. When he finished the prayer, he said, ‘May Allah curse the scorpion; it spares neither the person who is praying nor any other.’ Then he called for water and salt and started wiping the place of the sting (with salt water) while reciting Surats Al-Kaafiroon, Al-Falaq, and An-Naas.” [At-Tabaraani in Al-Muʻjam As-Sagheer and Al-Muʻjam Al-Awsat] The hadith was cited by Al-Albaani in his book As-Silsilah As-Saheehah, no. 548. Surat Al-Ikhlaas is not mentioned in it. We could not find any hadith that mentioned Surat Al-Ikhlaas in the Ruqyah for the scorpion sting. It was also narrated in the hadith on the authority of Abu Saʻeed Al-Khudri that says that Surat Al-Faatihah is a Ruqyah for the scorpion sting. The hadith was cited in Saheeh Muslim and other books.

As for saying that Allah makes the person who recites Surat An-Nasr along with Surats Al-Kaafiroon, Al-Falaq, An-Naas, and Al-Ikhlaas happy and rich, we did not find any hadith with the wording that it “makes him happy”. Perhaps you are referring to the hadith that reads, “O Jubayr! When you set out on a journey, would you like to be the best of your companions in appearance and to have the most provisions? Recite these five surahs: Al-Kaafiroon, An-Nasr, Al-Ikhlaas, Al-Falaq, and An-Naas. Start and end each surah with saying Bismillaah Ar-Rahmaan Ar-Raheem.” This hadith was cited by Abu Yaʻli, and Al-Albaani commented on it saying, “It is Munkar (a narration by a weak narrator that goes against another authentic narration).” [As-Silsilah Adh-Dhaʻeefah, no. 6963]

As for whether Surat Al-Kafiroon was revealed in Makkah and whether it should be recited in the Fajr and Maghrib prayers, then ‘yes’, it was revealed in Makkah according to most scholars. Ibn Al-Jawzi may Allaah have mercy upon him said, “There are two views in this regard; the first is that it was revealed in Makkah, and this was the view held by Ibn Masʻood, Al-Hasan, and the majority of the scholars. The second is that it was revealed in Madeenah, and this view was narrated on the authority of Qataadah.” [Zaad Al-Maseer]

The Prophet, sallallahu ʻalayhi wa sallam, used to recite Surat Al-Kaafiroon in the Sunnah prayer of the Fajr and Maghrib. Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, narrated that the Prophet, sallallaahu ʻalayhi wa sallam, recited Surat Al-Kaafiroon and Surat Al-Ikhlaas in the Sunnah of the Fajr.” [Muslim, Abu Daawood, An-Nasaa’i, and Ibn Maajah]

Ibn Masʻood, may Allah be pleased with him, said, “I cannot enumerate (how many times) I heard the Messenger of Allah, sallallahu ʻalayhi wa sallam, recite Surat Al-Kaafiroon and Surat Al-Ikhlaas in the two-Rakʻah (unit of prayer) (Sunnah) prayer after the Maghrib and before the Fajr .” [At-Tirmithi; Al-Albaani: Hasan (good)]

Ibn ʻUmar, may Allah be pleased with him, said, “I watched the Messenger of Allah, sallallahu ʻalayhi wa sallam, recite Surat Al-Kaafiroon and Surat Al-Ikhlaas twenty-something times in the two-Rakʻah Sunnah prayer before the Fajr and after the Maghrib.” [Ahmad; Al-Arnaa’oot: authentic]

As for reciting it in the obligatory Maghrib prayer, we found two hadiths in this regard; however, they are not authentic:

The first: Ibn ʻUmar, may Allah be pleased with him, said, “The Prophet, sallallahu ʻalayhi wa sallam, used to recite Al-Kafiroon and Al-Ikhlaas in the Maghrib prayer.” [At-Tirmithi] Al-Arnaa’oot declared it to be Dha'eef (weak). Al-Albani said, “It is Shaath (narrated by a trustworthy narrator but differing from the narration of other trustworthy narrators). What is known is that he, sallallahu ʻalayhi wa sallam, used to recite them in the Sunnah prayer of the Maghrib.

The second: Jaabir ibn Samurah, may Allah be pleased with him, said, “The Messenger of Allah, sallallahu ʻalayhi wa sallam, used to recite Al-Kaafiroon and Al-Ikhlaas in the Maghrib on Friday eve, and he used to recite Surats Al-Jumuʻah and Al-Munaafiqoon in the ʻIshaa’ – on Friday eve.” This hadith was cited by Ibn Hibbaan, and Al-Albaani said that its chain of narration is very weak.

Allah knows best.
