Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

We did not mention in our Fataawa that the mother of the Believers Hafsah may Allaah be pleased with her was short tempered, and we have not come across what indicates this in the books of the Sunnah. Rather, this was mentioned about the mother of believers Zaynab bint Jahsh may Allaah be pleased with her.

As for the issue of the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) divorcing Hafsah may Allaah be pleased with her and then taking her back, then this was mentioned in many Ahadeeth.

For instance, Ibn ‘Abbaas may Allaah be pleased with him narrated that ‘Umar may Allaah be pleased with him said that “the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) divorced Hafsah, then took her back.” [Abu Daawood -in the Book of Divorce, Chapter: Taking a wife back (after divorce)]

This was also reported by Ibn Maajah and Ibn Hibbaan, and by An-Nasaa’i in As-Sunnan Al-Kubra.

Also, Ibn Sa’d and At-Tabaraani reported that the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said: “Jibreel (Gabriel) came to me and said: Take Hafsah back, as she frequently observes the fast and frequently prays at night, and she will be your wife in paradise.

You may refer to the various narrations of the Hadeeth and their classification in Silsilatul-Ahadeeth As-Saheehah by Al-Albaani under no 2007.

The reason why the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) divorced Hafsah may Allaah be pleased with her was that the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) entrusted her with a secret and she disclosed it, which was about finding Maariyah, the mother of his son Ibraheem, in his home. The story is famous and was mentioned in the books of biographies and Tafseer (interpretation of the Quran).

Allah Says (what means): {And [remember] when the Prophet confided to one of his wives a statement; and when she informed [another] of it and Allah showed it to him, he made known part of it and ignored a part. And when he informed her about it, she said, “Who told you this?” He said, "I was informed by the Knowing, the Acquainted.} [Quran 66:3]

Hafsah, and all the other wives of the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) were of great character and were righteous and upright on the religion. How would they not be like this while they were the wives of the best of Allah’s creation and the last of His Prophets and Messengers. Despite this fact, they were just like the wives of other people discussing and arguing with their husband while observing moral etiquettes with him. The Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) tolerated this from them and was patient and he did not consider this to be a mistreatment to him.
