He Is Forced to Serve Sheeshah in a Family Business

Question

I was offered a job in a family business, it’s a bakery. However, now they are forcing me to serve shisha, or I’ll lose my job. I continuously begged them to not do it, is it permissible if I am forced ? Getting another job is almost impossible for me at the moment. Please help.

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

Sheeshah is forbidden; it is neither permissible for a person to consume it nor to serve it.

Since this profession requires serving it, then it is not permissible for you to work in it unless you are poor and needy and you do not find a permissible work from which you can earn your necessary spending and that of those whom you are obligated to provide for and spend on. In this case only are you permitted to remain in this job until you find another permissible one, and it is an obligation on you to endeavor to find one. Indeed, necessity is valued according to its proper value.
