Obedience to Parents is Obligatory on Matters that Have a Sound Cause

Question

Assalamualaikum. My mother wants me to tell her about any problems that I have. I find it highly uncomfortable to discuss my problems with people I know, and some of my problems involve sins that I previously committed or situations that were embarrassing for me. Am I obligated to tell her about all of my problems? Thank you.

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

You are not obliged to inform your mother about all your problems. If she orders so, you do not have to obey her on that. Obedience to parents is obligatory on matters that have a sound cause in the favor of the parent and which bring no harm to the son. Review Fatwa 461938.

However, you should make sure to please your mother and avoid displeasing her in goodness. So, you do not need to clearly inform her that you refuse to tell her about what she had asked for, but use wisdom to tell her about matters that cause you no problems and embarrassment.

Allah knows best.
