Fatwa CenterIs non-halal meat impure?
Question
Asalamu Alaykum. Is non-halal meat najis I know pork is najis but what about non-halal chicken and beef. My Local Sheikh said non-halal meats like chicken is not najis. Is there a difference of opinion? Please show me evidence. Thank you.
Answer
All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammed 
is His slave and Messenger.
The animal that has not been slaughtered according to Islamic law is considered a dead animal, and the dead animal is impure according to the majority of the jurists. The Kuwaiti Encyclopedia of Fiqh reads: “The jurists (Hanafi, Maliki, Shafi'i, and Hanbali) are of the view that the dead animal is impure in nature, and Allah The Almighty has prohibited eating it. He the Almighty says (what means): {Prohibited to you are dead animals.} [Quran 05:03]. It is described as impure in His saying (which means): {Say, 'I do not find within that which was revealed to me [anything] forbidden to one who would eat it unless it be a dead animal or blood spilled out or the flesh of swine - for indeed, it is impure...} [Quran 06:145]. And the impurity in language means dirtiness and filthiness, and Al-Razi cited the consensus on the impurity of dead animal.”
So, the meat slaughtered in a manner different from that which is prescribed in Sharee'ah is impure by the consensus of the scholars.
The jurists differed regarding the impurity of some parts of the dead animal that death does not happen to them, such as bones, hair, feathers, skin, and the like; this may be what the sheikh you mentioned meant.
