Is It Permissible to Attribute a Piece of AI-Generated Work to One's Name?

Question

Assalamu-alaykum
I want to spread beneficial knowledge using public articles online. I first take AI generated text, then use an automatic humanizer tool, and sometimes apply small edits. Experts later verify accuracy.
Is it permissible to publish under my name as the one who supervises the final result? What must I credit, and is reformulating AI text of general ideas allowed? How about unique specific ideas?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu`alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.

It is not permissible for a person to publish articles generated by artificial intelligence while attributing them to himself and claiming they are his own writing, without having carried out a complete review, verification, and genuine formatting of the article. This falls under lying, falsehood, and claiming for oneself what one has not actually been given.

It is reported in the hadith that the Messenger of Allah, sallallaahu`alayhi wa sallam, said: "Whoever deceives is not one of us." (Muslim)

And it is mentioned in the hadith: "The one who claims for himself what he has not been given is like one who wears two garments of falsehood." (Bukhārī and Muslim)

What is permissible, rather, is to benefit from artificial intelligence in preparing articles, then to review what the AI has generated, verify the accuracy of the content, attribute statements whose attribution the AI neglected to their rightful sources, check that the AI has not hallucinated or produced incorrect information or fabricated inauthentic texts – correcting any such errors – and then for the writer himself to undertake the arrangement and formatting of the article.

It is stated in a Fatwā of Dār Al-Iftāʾ Al-Miṣriyyah (Egypt's Dar Al-Ifta): "Artificial intelligence is a permissible means for producing scholarly content, so long as it remains merely an assisting tool in research and information-gathering, provided that the author is himself proficient and capable in this stage of scholarly research such that he could perform it without AI, and provided that the author remains the greatest contributor to the work — verifying the accuracy of the information, attributing it to its rightful sources, and undertaking its arrangement and formatting himself. But if the author uses artificial intelligence to produce the content in its entirety, and then attributes the content to himself without having expended what is required of research, reflection, study, and diligent care — then this is forbidden. As it involves deception, misrepresentation, lying, and claiming for oneself what one has not actually been given, as well as the disabling of human intellectual effort, along with the risks it carries of academic plagiarism and the spread of incorrect information." Allah knows best.
