A New Muslim Fears About Informing Her Parents

Question

Asaalam Alakum. I am a new Muslim and have lots of questions that I want answered about Islam. If the prayer is very important, how shall I go about it? Do you recommend any site where I could find the answers?. If there is any audio site can I download it? Also, do I tell my parents I am converted since I am from Hindu background?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

We ask Allah to bless you and guide you to know Islam in its reality. May Allah grant you the useful knowledge and the right performance. Anytime you need to inquire about Islam you should refer to Muslim scholars.

Allah Says (what means): {…so ask the people of the Reminder if you do not know.} [Quran 21:7]

As for the problem related to informing your parents of your embracing Islam, we advise you to do the following:

If your informing them about your embracing Islam will cause any trouble or harm to you, then do not inform them. You are still a new Muslim with little knowledge about Islam, and it is not good to inform them as long as they have not tried to keep you away or prevent you from Islam, since they are non-Muslims (Hindus). On the other hand, you still need to know more about Islam. As long as you are novice, you may not be able to show steadfastness before them.

When you learn and know much about Islam correctly, your arguments will be stronger, and you will be able to answer their doubts and misconceptions about Islam.

You will then be able, by the grace of Allah, to invite your parents, which is a responsibility upon you, after you have enriched yourself with the knowledge of Islam, its ruling and objectives.

Therefore, you should study more about Islam and learn about its rulings and memorize something from the Quran and the Prophet's narrations.

Do not inform your parents now of your Islam, for Islamically, it is not a must to inform them. If your parents are informed now, they are likely to object and create hurdles for you which you do not need at this time.

Allah knows best.
