Wife Wants Another Child but Husband Wants Her to Study

Question

I would like to have another child, but my husband doesn't. he wants me to study something that I don't want to study. I am not interested in it and most people who study/work it are men. He want me to study for 4-5 years, and then to have another child. Please advice what should I do.

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

If, as you mentioned, your husband wants you to study and work in a mixed environment and delay having a child, then you are not obliged to obey him because he is ordering you to commit a sin. The Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said: “No one should be obeyed in orders that are against Allah's Orders.”

So, try to convince your husband of the primary task of the woman which is to educate the children and look after the home. In fact, the role of the woman in her home is a major contribution.

On the other hand, there is no harm if the woman does other work if necessary. But such work should not be among mixed sexes. Her work should fit her very nature and should not be contrary to her primary role.
