Biography of Nusaybah bint Ka'b

Question

I would like to know about Nusaibah Bint K'ab.

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

Nusaybah bint Ka'b Al-Ansaariyyah, whose nickname was Umm 'Ammaarah, is known both her name and nickname. She is among the best women Companions of the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) who strongly took part in Jihaad (armed struggle). She is one of those who attended the second pledge of Al-'Aqabah with her husband Zayd ibn 'Aasim and two sons, 'Abdullaah and Habeeb may Allaah be pleased with them all, who was killed by Musaylamah the Liar. Her brother 'Abdullaah participated in the Battle of Badr and her other brother 'Abdur-Rahmaan was among those who wanted to take part in Jihaad but did not have the means. They came to the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) asking to provide them with the means to participate in Jihaad. However, even the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) did not have anything and could not provide them with what they needed for Jihaad. Thereupon, they began to cry with deep sorrow. For this, they were called Al-Bakkaa'oon ("the Weepers") in Islamic history.

Nusaybah may Allaah be pleased with her took part in the Battle of Uhud, Al-Hudaybiyyah, Hunayn and Al-Yamaamah. When she was informed that Musaylamah had killed her son Habeeb may Allaah be pleased with him she vowed to kill Musaylamah or to die in this task. So, she participated in the Battle of Al-Yamaamah which was fought under the leadership of Khaalid may Allaah be pleased with him. Her son 'Abdullaah may Allaah be pleased with him killed Musaylamah in this battle and he was also killed as a martyr (Shaheed). Her hand was cut off in this battle and she received fourteen wounds in her body. She also fought courageously in the Battle of Uhud. May Allaah be pleased with her and make her among the inhabitants of Paradise.

Allaah Knows best.
