Do I have to pay someone who lost a lot due to my advice

Question

Do I have to pay someone who lost a lot of money due to my recommendations and talking? This person who lost the money for investment totally trusted me and invested. Please help.

Answer

Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds; and may His blessings and peace be upon our Prophet Muhammad and upon all his Family and Companions.

You did not commit a sin neither do you have to pay anything for this person who sought your advice, provided you were sincere in your advice to him.

So, if you did not wish to deceive him, and things turned wrong this is not your fault, as the unseen is known only to Allah. So, his loss, in this case is not your fault.

The only thing that happened was that you made a mistake unwillingly and this is pardoned by Allah. Ibn Majah reported from Abu Dhar that the Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam) said: "Allah has pardoned for my Ummah, the mistake, the forgotten matter and the thing they do under compulsion".

On the other hand, if you knew that what you advised him to invest in was bad for investment, you committed a sin but you are not asked to compensate him unless you actively participated in his investing. This is the opinion of the majority of scholars.

Allah knows best.
