Regrets treatment after being kind to neighbour

Question

I just want to know what to do after I was so kind with my neighbours as the Prophet, sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam, asked us to do I never been lucky with them even if I help and be there for them I am so sad.

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. We ask Allaah to exalt his mention as well as that of his family and all his companions.

The rights of a neighbor in Islam are very great. Islam emphasizes on being good and kind to neighbors. Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said: "Jibreel kept advising me of the rights of neighbors so much that I thought he would make them my heirs." [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

Allaah commands a Muslim to be kind and to pardon those who insult or offend him. This becomes more emphatic in the case of a neighbor. Allaah says (interpretation of meaning): {And not equal are the good deed and the bad. Repel [evil] by that [deed] which is better; and there upon, the one whom between you and him is enmity [will become] as though he was a devoted friend. But none is granted it except those who are patient, and none is granted it except one having a great portion [of good].}[41: 34, 35].

Therefore, we advise the questioning sister, to be kind with her bad-behaving-neighbors, forgive their offense and continue making favor to them. Be sure, Allaah will certainly reward you.

Imaam Muslim may Allaah have mercy upon him reported that a man came to the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) and said: “O Messenger of Allaah, I have relatives with whom I uphold the ties of kinship but they cut me off; I treat them well but they mistreat me; I am patient with them and they harm me.” The Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said: “If it is as you say, then it is as if you are stuffing hot ashes [in their mouths], and you will continue to be supported by Allaah against them so long as you continue to be like that.

"Stuffing hot ashes" means your kindness to them inspite of their harshness is like feeding them hot ash for the sin they are committing by their wrong deeds.

Allaah knows best.
