She received a copy of Quran before she became a Muslim

Question

I am recently married to a Muslim man. I myself am not yet converted to Muslim. My husband wants me to wait to take Shahadah until he can be with me. I read here that the Quran should not be given to a non-believer. I had already been reading online about Islam prior to my husband seeking my hand in marriage and already felt in my heart that Islam is the religion for me. Since knowing my husband, he has brought me even closer to Allaah. After I went to his country to marry him, he gave me his Quran so that I could read Allaah's word and ready myself for Shahadah. My question is: Was it wrong for my husband to give me the Quran?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. We ask Allaah to exalt his mention as well as that of his family and all his companions.

We thank the questioner for visiting our site and supplicate Allaah to guide her to the true religion.

Basically, giving Mus-haf (Arabic text of the Quran) to a non-Muslim is not allowed lest he disregards it or misuses it or at least not respect it as it should be respected. The Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said: "Do not travel with the Quran to the land of enemies lest they take it." [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

Also, the Quran should not be touched except while in the state of ritual purity which is not valid from a disbeliever. But there is no impediment to give the translation of the Quran to a non-Muslim free from the Arabic text. The Quran may be taught to him or be recited for him without touching it.

Therefore, if your husband had given you the Quran with Arabic text, then we advise you to give it back to him, and you should not touch it until you embrace Islam. Allaah Says (which means): {And whoever desires other than Islam as religion never will it be accepted from him, and he, in the Hereafter, will be among the losers.}[Quran 3:85].

We are confident that if the questioner studies Islam thoroughly and recites the translation of Quran impartially, aiming to reach the truth, she will surely conclude that Islam is the only true and just religion. Surely she will know that the Quran is the Word of Allaah revealed by Him, that the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is the messenger of Allaah, and that he is the one about whom the Prophet Jesus may Allaah exalt his mention had given glad tidings.

To know the prophecies given by Jesus may Allaah exalt his mention about Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) read Fatwa: 81396, to know 'Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) in the Bible' read Fatwa: 83990; to know 'What is Islam' read Fatwa: 88188 and Fatwa: 88276 about 'The reality of Jesus', may Allaah exalt him mention.

Dear questioner, embrace Islam, you will have success in this life and the next life and you will save yourself from the punishment of the Day of Judgment.

We supplicate Allaah to guide you to the right path and lead you to what He likes and pleases Him. We hope that soon you will inform us the news of your embracing Islam.

Allaah Knows best.
