The interpretation of the narration: "If a man were to be drugged on his face.."

Question

What is the interpretation of the narration of the Prophet, sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam, in which he said: "If a man were to be drugged on his face from the day he was born until he dies as an old man whilst in the obedience of Allaah, he will still belittle this on the Day of Judgement"?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. We ask Allaah to exalt his mention as well as that of his family and all his companions.

The above narration was reported by Ahmad may Allaah have mercy upon him in his Musnad, and by Al-Bukhari may Allaah have mercy upon him in his book entitled 'History', and by At-Tabaraani may Allaah have mercy upon him in his book Al-Kabeer; and it is narrated by 'Utbah Ibn 'Abd As-Sulami may Allaah be pleased with him. Moreover, As-Suyooti and Al-Albaani may Allaah have mercy upon them classified it as authentic.

An-Nawawi may Allaah have mercy upon him said regarding the interpretation of this narration: 'This is when he sees with his own eyes the great and marvellous reward that he obtains from Allaah.'

Allaah Knows best.
