An employee carrying out private work during working hours

Question

Dear Scholer – Asslam alaikum Is it right in Islam if a person working in a place and same tame he is earning through private works in the office timing without the knowledge of his employer. What if he do so after the office timing but using the materials provided by the employer for the office purpose like car, mobile phone, etc. and also if not using office time or materials. What is the status if he is doing so because of his financial problems as the employer giving him low salary and not treating him good way

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

It is not permissible for an employee to carry out any outside work [either personal or for another company] during his working hours because during his work the time is exclusively owned by his employer only. He is also not permitted to use working materials, like car, phone and the like for purposes other than the purpose of work unless he obtains prior permission from the employer.

However, after working hours, he is permitted to do anything he likes provided he does not use the working materials.

A low salary or bad treatment of the employer is not a sound reason for cheating him or taking his money illegally. Allaah Says (what means): {And do not consume one another’s wealth unjustly.}[Quran 2:188].

Allaah Knows best.
