When the verse 49:2 was revealed

Question

Salam, I want to ask a question that when was this verse revealed:- Surah Al-Hujurat :- "O you who have attained to faith! Do not raise your voices above the voice of the Prophet, and neither speak loudly to him, as you would speak loudly to one another, lest all your [good] deeds come to nought without your perceiving it." Thanks.

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.

Allaah says (what means): {O you who have believed, do not raise your voices above the voice of the Prophet or be loud to him in speech like the loudness of some of you to others, lest your deeds become worthless while you perceive not.} [Quran 49:2]

The above verse was revealed to the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, in Madeenah in the year 9 A.H. according to some scholars. Al-Bukhari may Allaah have mercy upon him reported that Ibn Abi Mulaykah may Allaah be pleased with him narrated: “The two righteous ones, Abu Bakr and ‘Umar may Allaah be pleased with them almost earned destruction when they raised their voices before the Prophet who was receiving the delegation of Banu Tameem. One of them recommended Al-Aqra‘ ibn Haabis, from Banu Mujaashi‘, while the other recommended another man. Nafi‘ (a sub-narrator) said: I don't remember his name. Abu Bakr said to ‘Umar, ‘You only wanted to contradict me,’ while ‘Umar said, ‘I did not intend to contradict you.’ Their voices then became loud: thereupon Allaah, the Exalted, sent down this verse (which means): {O you who have believed, do not raise your voices . . .} ‘Abdullaah ibn Az-Zubayr said, “After that, ‘Umar's voice was so low that the Messenger of Allaah had to ask him to repeat what he was saying so that he could understand what he was saying to him.” [End of quote]

Therefore, this story indicates that the verse was revealed when the delegation of Banu Tameem came to visit the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam. Ibn Hajar said in Al-Fat'h (Fat'h Al-Baari): “They (delegation of Banu Tameem) came in the year 9 A.H.” [End of quote]

Allaah Knows best.
