All Prophets after Noah and Abraham are from their descendants

Question

Assalaamu alaykum. I was just wondering, does verse 57:26 of the Quran mean that every Prophet came from Noah and Abraham? So would the Buddha, if he was a Prophet, have been from the descendance of Abraham?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

Allah says (what means): {And We have already sent Nooh (Noah) and Ibraaheem (Abraham) and placed in their descendants Prophethood and scripture; and among them is he who is guided, but many of them are defiantly disobedient.} [Quran 57:26]

This verse confirms that all the Prophets and Messengers are from the descendants of Nooh and Ibraaheem, may Allah exalt their mention.

Tafseer Ibn Katheer reads:

Allah, the Exalted, states that since He sent Nooh, may Allah exalt his mention, all the Prophets and Messengers that He sent after that were from his offspring. Likewise was Ibraaheem; all the revealed Divine Books and all the Messengers that received revelation after Ibraaheem were from his offspring. Allah, the Exalted, said in another verse: {…and placed in his descendants Prophethood and scripture.} [Quran 29:27] The last among the Prophets of the Children of Israel was `Eesa (Jesus), son of Mary, who prophesied the good news of the coming of Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ); thus Allah, the Exalted, said, {Then, We sent following their footsteps Our messengers and followed [them] with Jesus, the son of Mary, and gave him the Gospel.} [Quran57:27]

Based on this, if we presume that someone was sent by Allah as a Prophet, then (we must also presume that) he must be from the descendants of Nooh or Ibraaheem, may Allah exalt their mention.

Allah knows best.
