Drawing a Picture of the Sky and Stars Is Not Astrology

Question

Permissibility of buying and making “personalised Star maps / charts”. These show the alignment of the stars on a date and location of your choice - e.g wedding date. My intention when having one is purely aesthetic reasons or to give as a gift for a reminder of a life event. I don’t think it’s anything to do with horoscopes or worshipping stars, but wanted to check in case. Is this art permissible or is it astrology?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

We did not understand your question clearly. If you mean drawing a picture of the sky and the stars and their locations on a portrait, for example, and writing on it that this was the shape of the sky and the stars on such-and-such date, say the date of marriage for example, and in such-and-such city, if this is what you meant, then it is permissible in itself and has nothing to do with astrology. This is not the case if these drawings include what astrologers believe, such as drawing a certain star in them, which astrologers believe that its rise is a reason for happiness and contentment. They draw a star on a portrait and write the date of marriage on it; undoubtedly this is a form of reassurance, reliance on, and promotion of the work of astrologers, which is not permissible. If you mean something else, then you should explain that to us.

Allah knows best.
